Dubai Gold Souk: A First-Timer's Buying Guide
The Dubai Gold Souk in Deira is one of the largest gold markets in the world — hundreds of shops, windows stacked with 22K necklaces, and a rate that moves through the day. Here's how to visit with confidence.
Where it is and when to go
The souk sits in Deira, on the north side of Dubai Creek, a short walk from Al Ras metro station (Green Line). Most shops open from around 10am to 10pm, often with an afternoon break, and stay busy into the evening. Evenings are cooler and livelier; mornings are quieter if you prefer space to browse.
Know the rate before you walk in
The single most useful thing you can do is check the live gold rate first. Every shop works from the same benchmark, so if you know today's 22K and 24K price per gram, you instantly know whether a quote is fair. Pull up the live rate on your phone and you're negotiating from knowledge, not guesswork.
How bargaining works
Prices at the souk are not fixed — bargaining is expected and part of the experience. A few pointers:
- The gold value (rate × weight) is fixed by the market; what you're really negotiating is the making charge.
- Ask for the making charge as a number, per gram or as a percentage — then compare two or three shops.
- Paying cash, or buying more than one piece, often earns a better making charge.
- Be friendly and unhurried. Walking to the next window is your strongest bargaining tool.
What to check before you pay
- Hallmark — every genuine piece is stamped with its karat (e.g. 22K, 916).
- Weight — ask to see the piece weighed in front of you.
- Invoice — get a receipt listing weight, karat, rate and making charge separately.
Take the live rate with you
